Huizong panicked and abdicated him, changing the following year to the first year of Jingkang. The Jin East Route Army immediately came to Kaifeng. He appointed Li Gang to defend the city. At the same time, he sent envoys to sue for peace and promised to cut the three towns of Taiyuan, Zhongshan and Hejian. The Jin army retreated. After that, he demoted and killed the "six thieves" such as Cai Jing and Tong Guan, but he wavered between the main battle and the main peace. He dismissed Li Gang and the three towns were not delivered.

In the autumn of 1126, the Jin army went south again, captured Taiyuan, and approached Kaifeng. He placed his hope in Guo Jing's "Liujia Divine Soldiers" and the city was defeated in leap November. He went to the Jin camp in person to ask for surrender. In February 1127, he was deposed as a commoner by the Jin people. In April 1127, he, Huizong, his clan, concubines, ministers and other thousands of people were taken captive to the north, and Northern Song was destroyed. After that, he was imprisoned in Jin dynasty for nearly thirty years, and died in Jin in 1156, at the age of fifty-seven.
