Sima Yue was named Shitong, the second son of Emperor Ming, and the same mother and brother as Emperor Cheng, who was first named King of Langya. In June 342, Emperor Cheng was seriously ill. Brothers Yu Bing and Yu Yi proposed to appoint Sima Yue instead on the grounds that the country was in trouble and it was appropriate to establish an eldest king. He Chong and others tried hard to appoint Emperor Cheng's son, but they were not adopted in the end. After Emperor Kang came to the throne, he changed the Yuan Dynasty to Jianyuan. The government was first assisted by Yu Bing and He Chong, and Yu Yi guarded Jingzhou. He once had ambitions to expedition to the north, but it was stopped due to lack of national strength. Emperor Kang died of illness in September 344 at the age of twenty-three, and was succeeded by the two-year-old prince Sima Dan.
