Zhu Youtang is the third son of Xianzong, and his biological mother Ji was originally a palace official. In order to avoid Wan Guifei, he was secretly raised in the palace until he was six years old before he recognized his father. In the same year, he was named Crown Prince. His biological mother died suddenly. After he came to the throne in 1487, he dismissed the ministers, punished the local scholar Li Zisheng, the eunuch Liang Fang, etc., dismissed the chief minister Wan'an who was dependent on power, and appointed Wang Shu, Ma Wensheng, Liu Jian, Li Dongyang, Xie Qian, etc., and the government was renewed.
Xiaozong was diligent in political affairs, insisted on banquets, and repeatedly summoned cabinet ministers to discuss politics in person; promulgated the "Regulations on Penalties" and compiled the "Da Ming Huidian"; ordered Liu Daxia to regulate the Yellow River, and Ye Qi to reform the Salt Law. He only had one concubine, Zhanghuangzhou, in his life, which was extremely rare among emperors in the past dynasties. However, he was too indulgent to Zhanghuangzhou's brothers Zhang Heling and Zhang Yanling, and the eunuch Li Guang was also favored for a time in his later years. He died of illness in 1505 at the age of thirty-six.
Xiaozong is famous for his generosity and diligence. He eliminates bad governance in Chenghua, appoints talents and accepts advice. The relationship between monarch and ministers is harmonious, and the society is relatively stable. It is called "Hongzhi Zhongxing". However, problems such as land annexation, financial difficulties, and lax border preparations were not fundamentally resolved, and he occasionally showed some appeasement to his relatives and eunuchs. Overall, he is one of the few steadfast leaders in the mid-term of Ming Dynasty.
