Yuan Ziyou is the third son of Prince of Pengcheng Yuan Xie. When he was young, he accompanied Emperor Xiaoming to study in the palace. In 528, Er Zhurong marched into Luoyang in the name of revenge for Emperor Xiaoming and proclaimed him emperor in Heyang. Er Zhurong then sank Hutaihou and his young master into the Yellow River, and massacred more than 1,300 princes and officials in Heyin (some say more than 2,000 people). Emperor Xiaozhuang's brother Yuan Shao and others were also killed, and the government fell into the hands of the Er Zhu family.

After that, Er Zhurong successively defeated Ge Rong, expelled Yuan Hao, and pacified Guan Long, and his authority grew stronger. Emperor Xiaozhuang was unwilling to be a puppet. In September 530, he designed to lure Er Zhurong into the palace and assassinated him with his own hands. Er Zhurong raised troops from his son Er Zhuzhao and others to counterattack, broke through Luoyang, and took Emperor Xiaozhuang to Jinyang and hanged him at the age of twenty-four.
