Yang Hao is the son of Prince of Qinxiao Yang Jun, the third son of Emperor Wen in Sui Dynasty. Yang Jun was dismissed by Emperor Wen for living a luxurious life, and died of illness in 600. His concubine Cui was sentenced to death for poisoning food. Yang Hao failed to ascend the throne at first, and was named King of Qin after Emperor Yang came to the throne. In March 618, Yuwen Huaji hanged Emperor Yang in Jiangdu and killed the accompanying clan members. He only supported Yang Hao, his brother Yuwenzhi and his good friend, as emperor for the purpose of giving orders. Yuwen Huaji immediately took Yang Hao and led the Xiaoguo army northward. In July, he fought with Li Mi at Tongshan and suffered heavy losses. After retreating to Wei County, he poisoned Yang Hao and proclaimed himself emperor.
