Emperor Zhao died childless in 74 BC, and Huo Guang welcomed him as emperor in the name of Shangguan Queen. According to the "Book of Han", within twenty-seven days after he ascended the throne, he sent envoys to recruit people everywhere, and committed 1,127 violations of etiquette and law. Huo Guang and his officials petitioned the Queen Mother of Shangguan to depose him. More than 200 old officials from Changyi who followed him to the capital were killed. He was sent back to his hometown in Changyi. In 63 BC, Emperor Xuan granted him the title of Marquis of Haihun and moved to Yuzhang County. He died in 59 BC. It is said that the fundamental reason for his deposing was the power struggle with Huo Guang.
