Wanyan Chenglin is a distant branch of the Jin dynasty clan. "History of the Jin Dynasty" states that his brother is descended from "the grandsons of Shizu". The specific lineage is unknown, and his official rank was Marshal of the East. In the first month of 1234, the allied forces of Mongolia and Song Dynasty had been besieging Caizhou for a long time. Aizong thought that he was too fat to break out of the siege on horseback, but Chenglin was agile and capable, so he passed the news to him, hoping that he would continue his reign after breaking through. On the day of Chenglin's accession following abdication, the Song army had conquered Nancheng. He led his ministers to pay homage to Aizong, who had hanged himself. The city fell before the funeral was completed. Chenglin died in the rebellion, and Jin Dynasty perished.
