Emperor Wanli wanted to make Zhu Changxun, the son of his beloved concubine Zheng Guifei, and the ministers argued for more than ten years citing the ancestral system. This was known as the "Struggle over the Origin of the Country" in history. He was not established as Crown Prince until 1601, and there were subsequent attacks on him. After he came to the throne in August 1620, he stopped mining taxes, distributed internal funds to reward the Liaodong frontier troops, and appointed ministers who had been demoted. The government and the public had high hopes for a while, but he fell ill more than ten days after taking the throne. He died suddenly after taking the red pill given by Li Kezhuo, and he only reigned for one month.
