Xiao Yi is the son of Zu Ding, and his stepbrother Xiao Xin is the king. He is the last of the four Pan Geng brothers to ascend the throne. "Historical Records" only records his generation. According to "Shang Shu·Wu Yi", before his son Wu Ding came to the throne, he "used to work outside and was a villain" and worked with the common people for a long time. The old theory is that this was Xiao Yi's intentional arrangement to let his son understand the sufferings of the people. After Xiao Yi's death, Wu Ding came to the throne, ushering in the most powerful period of Shang Dynasty.

Wu Ding, Xiao Yi's son, lived among the people for a long time before he came to the throne, worked with the common people, and was familiar with the hardships of farming. The pseudo-ancient text "Shang Shu·Shuo Ming" also says that Wu Ding once studied under Gan Pan.
