He was thrifty and studious. After he came to the throne, he released more than 3,000 palace maids, eliminated redundant expenses, and was diligent in listening to politics. The government and the public once hoped for ZTE. However, the Niu Sengru, Li Zongmin and Li Deyu factions in the DPRK were at odds with each other. He lamented, "It is easy to go to Hebei to be thieves, but it is difficult to go to DPRK to be cliques."

Wenzong hated the power of eunuchs. He first failed in his plot with chief minister Song Shenxi, then appointed Li Xun and Zheng Zhu. In 835, he used the internal conflicts among the eunuchs to kill Wang Shoucheng. He then planned to kill Chou Shiliang and others. However, he failed in the Ganlu Incident and the courtiers were massacred. After that, the eunuch became more tyrannical. Compared with the subjugated king who was controlled by his domestic slaves, he became depressed and became ill. He died of illness in the first month of 840.
